Actor Michael Ansara died 31 July 2013, after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. Born 15 April 1922 in Syria, he was a nominee for the Saturn Award for best supporting actor (The Manitou) in 1979, and his television work earned him a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960.

Ansara’s family emigrated to the United States when he was two years old, settling firsts in Lowell, Massachusetts, and then moving to California a decade later. After graduating from Los Angeles City College, he began appearing on television in the 1950s, where his looks gained him roles as Indians in many Westerns, including a starring turn in Law of the Plainsman (1959-60).

His most memorable sf appearance was when he created the role of the Klingon Kang in the Star Trek episode “Day of the Dove”. He reprised the role in the Deep Space Nine episode “Blood Oath” (1994) and the Voyager episode “Flashback” (1996). He is one of six actors to portray the same character in three of the Star Trek series. He also played the Draconian commander Kane in the television series Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (1979-80). Ansara was married three times, first actress Jean Byron (1949-56), who died in 2006. He second marriage, in 1958, was to actress Barbara Eden (who starred in I Dream of Jeannie). Ansara appeared in three episodes and directed one (his only directing credit), and they had one son, Matthew, who died in 2001. Ansara and Eden divorced in 1974. In 1977, he married 1970s’ actress Beverly Kushida, who survives him.
