Top Box Office Grossers: Second Week in September 2011

Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 9-15 September 2011. Super-disease thriller Contagion opened at #1, sneezing up $29.7 million. Boxing pic Warrioropened at #3. Rise of the Planet of the Apes slipped from #4 to #6, turning over $5.0 million, for a six-week total of $169.0 million. Shark Night 3D slipped from #5 to #7, gobbling up $4.2 million, for a two-week total of $15.5 million. Apollo 18 fell from #3 to #9, landing $3.7 million, for a two-week total of $15.8 million.
Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark fell from #8 to #11, claiming $2.8 million, for a three-week total of $21.7 million. Spy Kids: All the Time in the World fell from #9 to #12, seeking out $2.8 million, for a four-week total of $34.5 million. The Smurfs fell from #10 to #14, smurfing up $2.1 million, for a seven-week total of $136.4 million. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part II slipped from #12 to #16, conjuring up $1.4 million, for a nine-week total of $377.5 million. Captain America: The First Avenger slipped from #13 to #17, commanding $1.1 million, for an eight-week total of $173.7 million. Cowboys & Aliens slipped from #14 to #18, rounding up $1.1 million, for a seven-week total of $98.3 million. Final Destination 5 fell from #17 to #22, scaring up $750 thousand, for a five-week total of $41.9 million.
