Western State College of Colorado has launched a new low-residency MFA in Creative Writing program. One of its three concentrations is Mainstream/Genre Fiction. In reference to Genre Fiction, they openly and actively welcome qualified student applicants who are interested in writing Science Fiction and Fantasy.
The Western State College program is unique in that its residency component takes place just once each year, in the summer, making it easier for students to schedule employment and life around. The rest of the year the program utilizes the usual low-residency student/mentor system and also online discussion boards and weekly feedback.
Western will start accepting applications for next summer’s cohort on 15 November 2010.

The creative faculty include Barbara Chepaitis and former SFWA president Russell Davis.
Western’s faculty and writing instruction is well worth your time and effort. Anyone interested in improving their craft in an awesome environment should check out this program. Studying under Mark Todd at WSC is an awesome experience.
