Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 11-17 September 2009. Animated post-apocalyptic flick 9, which was #11 on the charts last week after being open only a few days, this week surged to the #2 spot (behind the new Tyler Perry film). 9 earned $12.9 million this week, for a box-office total of $17.4 million to date. After two weeks at #1, The Final Destination dropped to #5, grossing $7.3 million, for a three-week total of $60.0 million. Horror film Sorority Row opened at #7, bringing in $6.4 million. District 9 fell from #5 to #8, taking in $4.9 million, for a five-week total of $109.8 million. Gamer fell from #4 to #9, grabbing $4.6 million, for a two-week total of $17.6 million.
GI Joe was down from #8 to #11, grossing $3.1 million, for a six-week total of $144.8 million. The Time Traveler’s Wife slipped from #10 to #12, earning $3.1 million, for a five-week total of $59.8 million. Halloween II dropped from #7 to #14, taking in $2.7 million, for a three-week total of $30.7 million. Shorts fell from #12 to #16, bringing in $1.4 million, for a four-week total of $19.9 million. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince slipped from #14 to #17, conjuring up another $1.2 million, for a nine-week total of $299.1 million. G-Force fell from #13 to #18, grossing $1.2 million, for an eight-week total of $116.9 million. Ponyo fell from #17 to #21, earning $750 thousand, for a five-week US total of $14.5 million (it opened last year in Japan as Gake no ue no Ponyo). Up slipped from #21 to #22, inflating its coffers with another $500 thousand, for a sixteen-week total of $291.5 million.
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, and Aliens in the Attic all slipped out of the top 25. Transformers, last week’s #20, has been in release for twelve weeks. Ice Age, which was $23, has been out for eleven weeks. And Aliens fell from #24 in its seventh week in the theaters.
