Top Box Office Grossers: Third Week in December

Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 12-18 December 2008. New opener, the Keanu Reeves remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still, took the top spot, with a domestic gross of $38.5 million. That pushed last week’s #2, Twilight, down to the #3 position, as the Stephenie Meyer-based vampire flick took in $11.1 million, for a four-week total of $153.2 million. Quantum of Solace dropped from #5 to #6, earning another $5.3 million, for a five-week total of $159.1 million.
With only two new movies opening this week above it (The Day the Earth Stood Still and Nothing Like the Holidays), Punisher: War Zone‘s drop from #8 to #13 doesn’t bode well for the film. It grossed $2.1 million for a two-week total of $7.8 million. The Polar Express actually climbed this week, from #24 to #22, earning another $350 thousand, for a two hundred and fourteen-week total of $179.9 million.
The Dark Knight fell from #21 out of the top 25 in its twenty-second week on the charts, but don’t feel sorry for the Batman Begins sequel: it’s domestic box office gross is closing in on $531 million.
