Director Robert Mulligan died 20 December 2008 of heart disease. Born 23 August 1925 in the Bronx, New York City, he was nominated for an Academy Award for his direction of To Kill a Mockingbird in 1963. The film was the adaptation of Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and starred Gregory Peck.
Mulligan also directed Reese Witherspoon’s first film, The Man in the Moon, as well as The Great Race (1960) and Bloodbrothers (1978). His sole genre film was the 1972 horror film The Other, which starred Uta Hagen and Diana Muldaur, and had an appearance by John Ritter.
Mulligan was the brother of actor Richard Mulligan (who died in 2000), and is survived by his wife, Sandy, who announced his death.
