Actor Fred Crane Dies

Actor Fred Crane died of complications from diabetes on 21 August 2008. Born Herman Frederick Crane on 22 March 1918 in New Orleans, Louisiana, he is probably best known for his role as Scarlett’s suitor in Gone with the Wind (1939). The character, either Brent Tarleton (according to The New York Times) or Stuart Tarleton (according to IMDB) also had the first line in the film. The other Tarleton twin was played by George Reeves (who would go on to play Superman on television).
Crane had very few film and television roles after that debut, though he did appear (uncredited) in episodes of Lost in Space and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. He also hosted a classical music radio show in Los Angeles for four decades, and until last year, operated a bed and breakfast in Barnesville (near Atlanta), Georgia, named for his GwtW character.
Crane was married five times, and is survived by his fifth wife, four children, eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Fred Crane was a true southern gentleman. He will be missed by everyone in Marietta, GA who knew him and loved him.
