Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art changing, growing, and planning

New York City’s six-year-old Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art (MoCCA) has several big announcements. Ellen S. Abramowitz has replaced MoCCA founder Lawrence Klein as Chairman of the museum; Klein takes the title Chairman Emeritus.
The museum’s SoHo gallery will be closed from 1 February to 5 March while it is reconfigured and rebuilt. Their plan is “to realign our movable wall units to allow for a more open gallery area, and allow for a more recognizable division in our exhibit areas.”
On 15 March, MoCCA will be sponsoring “SPLAT! A Graphic Novel Symposium” at the New York Center of Independent Publishing. Keynote speaker will be Scott McCloud.
The Seventh Annual MoCCA Art Festival will be 7 and 8 June at the Puck Building (293 Lafayette Street, a few blocks from the gallery). Their guest of honor this year will be Bill Plympton, and J.J. Sedelmeier and Mo Willems are already scheduled to appear at the MoCCA’s sketch table.
Upcoming exhibits at the soon-to-be redesigned gallery include “Moving Pictures,” which will “examine the transition of print comic and cartoon characters into live-action and animated film and TV stars.” Previews for the show will begin 17 April. In September, they’ll be presenting “Drawing the Vote,” an exhibit “exploring the election process through the filter of comic and cartoon art.” Precise opening and closing dates, as well as opening night party details, will be forthcoming.
