The Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art (MoCCA) and Metro Anime are hosting a free screening and discussion of the anime feature film Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of its theatrical release. The 121-minute film debuted in 1987 with the title Ôritsu uchûgun Oneamisu no tsubasa. It was the first feature film by then-fledgling studio, Gainax, which has since produced two dozen more films, including Shin Seiki Evangerion (Neon Genesis Evangelion: Rebuild of Evangelion 01), which will be released this Septemeber. The 1987 film is also important as the debut of many now-famous animators, including Yamaga Hiroyuki, Anno Hideaki, Kitakubo Hiroyuki, Maeda Mahiro, Itano Ichiro, Sadamoto Yoshiyuki, Egawa Tatsuya, and Sonoda Ken’ichi.
The screening will be on 9 April at 6:30PM at the MoCCA Gallery, 594 Broadway, Suite 401 (between Houston and Prince Streets), in New York City. The screening is free to the public, but seating is limited. Doors open at 6:15PM.
