The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has announced this year’s Golden Globe Award nominations, the 71st in the award’s history. The award ceremony takes place at 8PM EST (5PM PST) on 12 January 2014 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, and will be telecast live on NBC.

Two years ago, seven sf/f/h films and three television programs combined for 14 nominations in 25 categories. Last year, it was eight films and two TV programs taking 11 nominations. This year, we’re down to a scant six films and one TV program, but 13 nominations. It’s a really tough award for an sf film….

American Horror Story: Coven: nominated for Best TV Movie or Mini-Series; nominated for Best Actress in a Mini-Series or TV Movie (Jessica Lange)

The Croods: nominated for Best Animated Feature Film

Despicable Me 2: nominated for Best Animated Feature Film

Frozen: nominated for Best Animated Feature Film; nominated for Best Original Song – Motion Picture (“Let It Go”)

Gravity: nominated for Best Motion Picture, Drama; nominated for Best Director – Motion Picture (Alfonso Cuaron); nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama (Sandra Bullock); nominated for Best Original Score – Motion Picture (Steven Price)

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire: nominated for Best Original Song – Motion Picture (“Atlas”)

SF/F/H television nominees are:

The Big Bang Theory: nominated for Best TV Series, Comedy; nominated for Best Actor in a Television Series, Comedy (Jim Parsons)
