Last December, Long Island, New York’s I-Con announced the cancellation of their 32nd annual convention (see this article). Now comes the word that a resurrection is in the works. The following is a press release from Katrina Lovett:![]()
After an 18-month hiatus due to venue changes, financing, and Superstorm Sandy aftermath, ICON Science Fiction, Inc, is relaunching their efforts through an Indiegogo Campaign at http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/i-con-returns to fund two separate conventions in 2014.
After more than thirty years of work in the community fostering education and exploration in science and technology by harnessing America’s fascination with science fiction and fantasy, ICON is asking for the community’s assistance via an Indiegogo campaign titled “I-Con Returns.” The target goal of $120,000 would enable the non-profit organization to organize and present LI-Con in March 2014 as a smaller preview event leading up to I-Con 32 in late June 2014, with educational programming aimed at all ages within the community.
Visitors are able to pledge at many levels in exchange for a variety of “perks” in the Indiegogo system. Starting at $2, perks include items like digital and printed thank you messages, T-shirts, bumper stickers, membership to either or both events in 2014, and for the true fan, a lifetime membership to all future I-Con conventions.
According to David Cortijo, a long-time I-Con volunteer, “I-Con has given a lot to me — and to many people I know — over many years. I think it’s fantastic we’ve got this opportunity to give something back to the organization, and to ensure it’s there for the next generation.”
The last generation of dreamers gave us things like personal computers, mobile phones, and electric cars. With the community’s help, what will the next generation be able to do?
Attended by more than 6,000 people each year, I-Con is a three-day event held on Long Island designed to encourage literacy, creativity, and interest in science and technology through science fiction, fact, and related genres. Programming at I-Con spans a wide range of topics and interests including science fiction, fantasy, horror, comics, anime, medieval reenactment, science, and technology. I-Con and LI-Con are organized by ICON Science Fiction Inc, a certified 501(c)(3) educational charity.
