A press release from Nonstop Press:
Just in time for Halloween Nonstop Press is doing its first Indiegogo campaign, a project titled The Monkey’s Other Paw. The idea behind The Monkey’s Other Paw has never been done before – Make a list of the greatest classic horror stories of all time and have modern authors create new sequels, prequels, hommages and re-imaginings. Among the stories selected are: “The Monkey’s Paw,” H.P. Lovecraft’s “The Call of Cthulhu,” Dylan Thomas’ ghost story “The Followers,” E.T.A. Hoffmann’s “The Sandman,” Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde,” and Saki’s “The Open Window.” Of course the book also includes Poe – in this case his unfinished story “The Lighthouse,” which is at last complete to horrific effect. There is also a graphic story letting us know what became of the Dorian Grey painting after the death of its subject. The list of authors in the book include: Barry N. Malzberg, Paul Di Filippo, Don Webb, Scott Edelman, Damien Broderick, and Steve Rasnic Tem among others. Nonstop Press is looking at The Monkey’s Other Paw Indiegogo campaign more as a pre-orders showcase for the book rather than a crowd-funding make-it-or-break-it endeavor. Edited by the Hugo and Locus Award nominated author Luis Ortiz the anthology will be published by the New York City based Nonstop Press.
A partial table of contents for the anthology includes:
“Richard Nixon Saved From Drowning, and The Terminal Villa” by Barry Malzberg (two pastiches inspired by J. G. Ballard’s “Terminal Beach”)
“The Doom that Came to Devil’s Reef” by Don Webb (Alternate POV story based on H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos)
“Eddie the Great” by Steve Rasnic Tem (updates Jekyll/Hyde)
“The Monkey’s Other Paw” by Alegría Luna Luz (gives us the aftermath of the classic horror tale)
“A True Blue Bouquet” by Ivan Fante (A sequel to Octavio Pax “The Blue Bouquet”)
“Ghostless” by Paul Di Filippo (Riffs on Dylan Thomas’s ghost story “The Followers”)
“The Alighted House” Alegría Luna Luz and Edgar Allan Poe (Poe’s unfinished fragment is only the beginning)
“The Unheimlich Maneuver” by Damien Broderick (Introduces Freud into Hoffmann’s “The Sandman”)
“Footfall” by Gay Partington Terry (A Kafka homage)
“The Gallery of Dorian Grey” by Martos
“A Most Extraordinary Man” by Scott Edelman (A “switcheroo” of the plot in Saki’s “The Open Window”)
