Artist Coelynn McInnich‘s first solo New York show opened Thursday. “Castles for a Synesthete” showcases her photography; in this case, large-format, computer-manipulated prints of photos based on a small-scale sculpture, which is also present. The photos owe some of their genesis to Rorshach prints, but far more involved, detailed, and three-dimensional. They draw the viewer in to another world, a land of planes, angles, and shadow. Standing back from the prints presents another view, as found images resolve into faces, buildings, and more.
The setting of the show itself offers a different study in contrasts: a wonderful room atop a nondescript building. A comfortable environment for art in an industrial neighborhood.
“Castles for a Synesthete” is on display at the Skylight Gallery, 538 West 29th Street, New York, NY 10001, through 2 June 2013. The gallery is open limited hours, but also by appointment.
