Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 17-23 August 2012. Action sequel The Expendables 2 opened at the top of the charts. YA animated horror-fest ParaNorman opened at #3, spooking up $19.6 million. The Dark Knight Rises slipped from #3 to #5, raising $16.3 million, for a five-week total of $415.0 million. The Odd Life of Timothy Green climbed from #10 to #6 in its first full week in release, growing $15.7 million, for a one-plus week total of $20.0 million. Jordin Sparks’s songfest Sparkle opened at #7. Total Recall fell from #6 to #10, recalling $5.1 million, for a three-week total of $53.4 million.
Ice Age: Continental Drift fell from #7 to #11, melting $4.6 million, for a six-week total of $151.7 million. Ted fell from #8 to #12, bearing up $2.3 million, for an eight-week total of $213.8 million. Brave slipped from #13 to #16, earning $1.3 million, for a nine-week total of $229.6 million. Action-comedy Hit and Run opened on the 22nd, but still managed to reach #17 on the charts. The Amazing Spider-Man fell from #12 to #18, spinning up $1.2 million, for a seven-week total of $257.9 million. Madagascar 3 slipped from #17 to #19, making $1.1 thousand (55% more than last week), for an eleven-week total of $213.1 million. The Watch fell from #11 to #22, defending $650 thousand, for a four-week total of $33.2 million.
Falling out of the top 25 this week were:
The Hunger Games (last week’s #23) in its twenty-second week in release (box office total: $407.8 million)
Men in Black 3 (last week’s #24) in its thirteenth week in release (box office total: $178.1 million)
Snow White and the Huntsman (last week’s #25) in its twelfth week in release (box office total: $154.8 million)
And for the week of 24-30 August 2012: ParaNorman held steady at #3, spooking up $11.9 million, for a two-week total of $31.5 million. The Dark Knight Rises held steady at #5, raising $10.3 million, for a six-week total of $425.3 million. The Odd Life of Timothy Green held steady at #6, growing $9.9 million, for a two-week total of $29.9 million. Bicycle thriller Premium Rush opened at #7.
Todd Lincoln’s supernatural thriller The Apparition opened at #12, haunting up $3.6 million. Ice Age: Continental Drift fell from #11 to #14, melting $2.6 million, for a seven-week total of $154.3 million. Total Recall fell from #10 to #15, recalling $2.5 million, for a four-week total of $55.9 million. Weinstein’s Western Lawless opened late in the week, but still managed to appear at #16. Ted fell from #12 to #17, bearing up $1.3 million, for a nine-week total of $215.2 million. Madagascar 3 climbed from #19 to #18, making $800 thousand, for a twelve-week total of $213.9 million. Brave slipped from #16 to #19, earning $800 thousand, for a ten-week total of $230.4 million. The Amazing Spider-Man slipped from #18 to #20, spinning up $750 thousand, for an eight-week total of $258.6 million.
