Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 29 June-5 July 2012. The long Independence Day holiday was very good to the movie industry. Seth MacFarlane’s oddball teddy bear comedy Ted opened at the top of the charts, bearing up $87.6 million. The Andrew Garfield reboot of the franchise, The Amazing Spider-Man, which opened on the 3rd, still managed to leap into #2 on the charts, spinning up $75.0 million. Steven Soderbergh’s new comedy Magic Mike opened at #3. Brave slipped from #1 to #4, earning $56.7 million, for a two-week total of $154.4 million. The new Tyler Perry movie Madea’s Witness Protection opened at #5. Madagascar 3 slipped from #2 to #6, making $20.1 million, for a four-week total of $188.3 million. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter slipped from #3 to #7, freeing $9.1 million, for a two-week total of $32.1 million. Prometheus fell from #4 to #9, thrilling up $7.2 million, for a four-week total of $120.6 million. Disney’s family drama People Like Us opened at #10.
The Avengers slipped from #8 to #11, earning $6.9 million, for a nine-week total of $609.0 million. Snow White and the Huntsman fell from #5 to #12, charming up $6.8 million, for a five-week total of $148.0 million. Men in Black 3 slipped from #9 to #13, neuralizing $4.7 million, for a six-week total of $171.4 million. Katy Perry documentary Part of Me opened on the 5th, but still managed to work its way to #16 on the charts. Seeking a Friend for the End of the World fell from #10 to #18, seeking out $1.5 million, for a two-week total of $7.1 million. The Hunger Games fell from #13 to #20, fighting up $700 thousand, for a fifteen-week total of $404.1 million. Dark Shadows climbed from #23 to #21, vamping up $650 thousand (50% more than last week), for an eight-week total of $76.6 million. Battleship fell from #14 to #23, battling up $600 thousand, for a seven-week total of $64.0 million.
