Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 18-24 May 2012. In the lead-in to the holiday weekend that starts the summer box office season, it still looks like nothing can defeat the superhero group. The Avengers dominates the box office for the third straight week at the top of the charts, earning $74.7 million, for a three-week total of $476.7 million. Battleship opened at #2, battling up $33.5 million. Comedy The Dictator opened at #3. Dark Shadows slipped from #2 to #4, vamping up $17.3 million, for a two-week total of $55.5 million. Rom-com What to Expect When You’re Expecting opened at #5. The Hunger Games slipped from #5 to #7, fighting up $4.4 million, for a nine-week total of $393.0 million. The Pirates! Band of Misfits slipped from #8 to #10, swashbuckling up $2.3 million, for a four-week total of $26.2 million.
Wrath of the Titans, which last week fell out of the top 25, this week rebounded to #14, playing on 40% more screens than last week, and grossing $650 thousand (125% more than last week), for an eight-week total of $82.7 million. The Lorax climbed from #20 to #15, greening up $650 thousand (15% more than last week), for a twelve-week total of $210.4 million. The Cabin in the Woods fell from #14 to #17, grossing $600 thousand, for a six-week total of $40.8 million. Mirror Mirror slipped from #18 to #19, magicking up $550 thousand, for an eight-week total of $61.7 million. John Carter fell from #17 to #22, adventuring up $450 thousand, for an eleven-week total of $72.2 million. The Raven fell from #12 to #23, screaming up $350 thousand, for a four-week total of $15.7 million.
