Top Box Office Grossers: First Week in April 2012

Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 30 March-5 April 2012. The Hunger Games maintains its death grip on the top spot, fighting up $79.4 million, for a two-week total of $269.3 million. Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, and all the Greek gods help Wrath of the Titans open at #2, adventuring up $43.9 million in its first week. Julia Roberts and Lily Collins retell Snow White in Mirror Mirror, magicking up $25.5 million. The Lorax slipped from #3 to #5, greening up $11.6 million, for a five-week total of $193.2 million. The 3-D rerelease of Titanic opened on the 4th, but still managed to wind up at #6. John Carter slipped from #4 to #7, earning $2.9 million, for a four-week total of $67.2 million.
Journey 2: The Mysterious Island slipped from #10 to #11, actioning up $1.2 million, for an eight-week total of $98.8 million. Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked climbed from #24 to #22, singing up $375 thousand (10% more than last week), for a sixteen-week total of $132.5 million.
Falling out of the top 25 this week were:
Silent House (last week’s #17) in its fourth week in release (box office total: $12.4 million)
Hugo (last week’s #23) in its nineteenth week in release (box office total: $73.8 million)
Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (last week’s #25) in its seventh week in release (box office total: $50.8 million)
