A press release from Puffin UK:
Sarah Hughes, Publishing Director for Puffin Fiction, has acquired UK and Commonwealth rights for a major new trilogy by US author Rick Yancey, after a substantial pre-empt. The Fifth Wave a fantastically fresh, distinctive twist on the alien invasion story, with a strong love story at its heart was acquired from G.P. Putnam’s Sons, a division of PGI. Film rights have already been sold by the author’s agent Brian DeFiore to GK films and Tobey Maguire’s Material Pictures.
In a trilogy that is being described as I am Number Four meets The Hunger Games, ordinary teenager Cassie survives an alien invasion and begins a quest to find her brother. The invasion is not how anyone could have imagined. Forced to survive alone, trusting no-one, Cassie could be the last person alive on earth…
Sarah Hughes said, “The Fifth Wave is fabulous, completely fresh and convincing entertainment from an award-winning writer. It makes you challenge your own assumptions and confront what you might need to do to survive. It is terrifyingly believable and a complete winner. We’re thrilled to be publishing it.”
Rick Yancey’s Alfred Kropp trilogy for young adults has been published in seventeen countries and was shortlisted for the prestigious Carnegie Medal. His most recent YA series The Monstrumologist was published by Simon and Schuster.
The Fifth Wave is a hugely exciting break-out book for Yancey. Puffin plan to publish the first book in the trilogy in 2013.
