The nominees for the 84th annual Academy Awards were announced this morning. Hugo and The Artist topped the list, with 11 and 10 nominations, respectively. The 13 feature-length genre films with nominations this year ties last year’s number, though the total number of nominations (34) is two more than last year.
This year, the Academy has modified the number of possible Best Picture nominees from ten to “between five and ten.” And last year, three of the ten nominees for Best Picture were sf/f/h films. This year, of nine total, we’re down to two, neither of which was promoted as genre: Hugo and Midnight in Paris.
Nominees of genre interest include:
The Adventures of Tintin: Music (Original Score)
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo: Actress in a Leading Role (Rooney Mara); Cinematography; Film Editing; Sound Editing; Sound Mixing
