Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 9-15 December 2011. Big-cast comedy New Year’s Eve opened at the top of the charts, followed by new comedy The Sitter. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn slipped from #1 to #3, devouring $10.5 million, for a four-week total of $262.1 million. The Muppets, slipped from #2 to #4, earning $8.7 million, for a three-week total of $67.5 million. Hugo slipped from #3 to #5, ratcheting up $8.1 million, for a three-week total of $35.4 million. Arthur Christmas slipped from #4 to #6, gifting itself $8.1 million, for a three-week total of $34.9 million. Happy Feet 2 fell from #5 to #8, dancing up $4.7 million, for a four-week total of $57.8 million. Immortals slipped from #8 to #10, taking in $3.6 million, for a five-week total of $81.0 million.
Puss In Boots slipped from #10 to #12, swashbuckling up $2.1 million, for a seven-week total of $142.3 million. In Time slipped from #15 to #16, saving $500 thousand, for a seven-week total of $36.6 million. Comedy Young Adult, in pre-release, managed to place at #18, while the new version of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy opened in the US at #20 (it’s been open in Europe since September).
