Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 2-8 December 2011. It looks like every studio decided to take this week off, holding any releases until later in the month. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn maintained its grip on the top spot on the charts, devouring $21.2 million, for a three-week total of $251.6 million. The Muppets, too, held steady at #2, earning $13.5 million, for a two-week total of $58.8 million. Hugo climbed from #5 to #3, ratcheting up $9.8 million (about two-thirds of what it earned last week), for a two-week total of $27.4 million. Arthur Christmas held steady at #4, gifting itself $8.9 million, for a two-week total of $26.9 million. Happy Feet 2 fell from #3 to #5, dancing up $7.3 million, for a three-week total of $53.1 million. Immortals fell from #7 to #8, taking in $6.2 million, for a four-week total of $77.4 million. Puss In Boots held steady at #10, swashbuckling up $3.8 million, for a six-week total of $140.2 million.
In Time fell from #14 to #15, saving $750 thousand, for a six-week total of $36.1 million. The limited-release, sexually charged Shame was the highest opener this week, at #17.
