Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 2-8 September 2011. The Helen Mirren thriller The Debt opened at #2. Faux-reality horror flick Apollo 18 opened at #3, landing $12.1 million. Rise of the Planet of the Apes slipped from #3 to #4, turning over $11.7 million, for a five-week total of $164.0 million. Horror-thriller Shark Night 3D opened at #5, gobbling up $11.3 million. Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark fell from #4 to #8, claiming $7.4 million, for a two-week total of $18.8 million. Spy Kids: All the Time in the World slipped from #6 to #9, seeking out $7.3 million, for a three-week total of $31.7 million. The Smurfs slipped from #7 to #10, smurfing up $6.3 million, for a six-week total of $134.2 million.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part II held steady at #12, conjuring up $4.0 million (a shade more than last week), for an eight-week total of $376.1 million. Captain America: The First Avenger climbed from #16 to #13, commanding $2.9 million (ten percent less than last week), for a seven-week total of $172.6 million. Cowboys & Aliens climbed from #15 to #14, rounding up $2.8 million, for a six-week total of $97.2 million. Conan the Barbarian fell from #8 to #16, slaying $2.4 million, for a three-week total of $20.6 million. Final Destination 5 slipped from #14 to #17, scaring up $2.2 million, for a four-week total of $41.2 million. After falling out of the top 25 last week Cars 2 raced back up the charts to #20, revving up $2.0 million, for an eleven-week total of $189.4 million. Fright Night fell from #9 to #21, sucking up $1.9 million, for a three-week total of $17.6 million.
