Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 8-14 July 2011. Spec fic took a week off, apparently catching our collective breath for Harry Potter. In the interim, Transformers: Dark of the Moon held onto the #1 spot for its second full week in release, transforming $67.6 million, for a two week total of $281.6 million. Comedies Horrible Bosses and Zookeeper opened at #2 and #3. Cars 2 slipped from #2 to #4, revving up $23.4 million, for a three-week total of $157.0 million. Super 8 slipped from #5 to #7, making $7.1 million, for a five-week total of $120.3 million. Green Lantern fell from #7 to #10, shining up $4.8 million, for a four-week total of $111.4 million.
X-Men: First Class slipped from #11 to #13, earning $2.2 million, for a six-week total of $142.8 million. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, slipped from #13 to #15, seeking out $1.7 million, for an eight-week total of $236.9 million. Kung Fu Panda 2 slipped from #14 to #16, kicking up $1.5 million, for a seven-week total of $159.6 million. Thor climbed from #20 to #18, pounding down $950 thousand (nearly 50% more than last week), for a ten-week total of $179.1 million. Rio slipped from #18 to #20, flying away with $750 thousand, for a thirteen-week total of $141.6 million.
