Top Box Office Grossers: Third Week in June 2011

Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 17-23 June 2011. A new week, a new genre film at the top of the charts. This week, we’re back to comic books, as Green Lantern‘s light was able to shine up $71.0 million in its debut week. Super 8 slipped from #1 to #2, making $31.6 million, for a two-week total of $83.1 million. Jim Carrey’s new comedy Mr. Popper’s Penguins opened at #3. X-Men: First Class slipped from #2 to #4, earning $17.8 million, for a three-week total of $126.2 million. Kung Fu Panda 2 slipped from #4 to #6, kicking up $14.2 million, for a four-week total of $148.9 million. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, fell from #5 to #8, seeking out $10.3 million, for a five-week total of $224.4 million.
Thor fell from #9 to #12, pounding down $1.7 million, for a seven-week total of $176.7 million. Rio slipped from #12 to #15, flying away with $900 thousand, for a ten-week total of $139.1 million. Rango slipped from #19 to #22, rounding up $300 thousand, for a sixteen-week total of $122.9 million.
