Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 20-26 May 2011. Jack’s back! Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the fourth movie in the Disney ride-turned-film-series, opened at the top of the charts, seeking out $113.6 million. Comedy sequel The Hangover Part II opened on the 26th, but still managed to drink up $31.6 million to take second place on the charts. Thor fell from #1 to #4, pounding down $20.4 million, for a three-week total of $150.3 million. Priest slipped from #4 to #6, slaying $6.5 million, for a two-week total of $25.6 million. Rio slipped from #5 to #7, flying away with $6.0 million, for a six-week total of $133.0 million. Kung Fu Panda 2, which opened on the 26th, kicked up $5.8 million, which was good for #8 on the chart.
Tangled, which fell out of the top 25 this second week in April, this week found new life on 191 screens (last week, it was showing on just 25), spinning up $950 thousand, for a twenty-six week total of $200.7 million. Insidious fell from #12 to #18, taking in $625 thousand, for an eight-week total of $52.6 million. Source Code fell from #13 to #20, arresting $575 thousand, for an eight-week total of $53.1 million. Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil fell #11 to #21, kidnapping $550 thousand, for a four-week total of $9.4 million. Rango, which last week fell out of the top 25, this week popped back up to #22, rounding up $550 thousand (while showing on 40% more screens than last week), for a twelve-week total of $121.4 million. Limitless slipped from #23 to #24, earning $500 thousand (nearly the same amount as last week), for a ten-week total of $78.2 million. Hanna fell from #17 to #25, slaying $450 thousand, for a seven-week total of $39.3 million.
