The Royal Mail has launched a new series of stamps, called Magical Realms.
The British postal system says “Royal Mail commissioned research from experts in British folklore and cultural history to determine the most appropriate characters from myth, legend and literature to populate this issue.
“It soon became obvious that most of these tales, whether ancient or modern, involved more than one magical character so it was decided to look at four different sets of stories and extract two characters from each.
“The stories chosen were the myths and legends of King Arthur, the Narnia stories of CS Lewis, JK Rowling’s Harry Potter series and the Discworld of Sir Terry Pratchett.”
The stamps, in a variety of denominations, depict:
* Rincewind from Terry Pratchett’s Discworld (1st Class)
* Nanny Ogg from Discworld (1st Class)
* Dumbledore from J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter, as portrayed by Michael Gambon (1st Class)
* Voldemort from Harry Potter, as portrayed by Ralph Fiennes (1st Class)
* Merlin from Arthurian legend (60p)
* Morgan Le Fay from Arthurian legend (60p)
* Aslan from C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia (97p)
* The White Witch from the Chronicles of Narnia, as portrayed by Tilda Swinton (97p)
The set of eight stamps is available for £4.78 from this page.
Hmm, why Nanny Ogg instead of Granny Weatherwax?
And how could they omit Gandalf? (Hmm #2, who would they use for the other JRRT wizard – Saruman? Galadriel? [Sauron isn’t as photogenic as Voldemort.])
