Stu Shiffman wins Rotsler Award

Mike Glyer announces that Stu Shiffman (of Seattle, Washington) is the winner of this year’s Rotsler Award, which is “given annually for long-time artistic achievement in amateur publications of the science fiction community.” The award, established in 1998, carries an honorarium of $300. It was formally announced on 27 November 2009, at this year’s Loscon.
Glyer writes “Shiffman’s deft portrayals of our adventures, in which his historical interests and sometimes talking animals take part, have place us in hieroglyphic Egypt, Victorian England, or the future imagined by E.R. Burroughs. He won the Hugo Award as Best Fan Artist in 1990. In 1981 he was the Trans-Atlantic Fan Fund delegate to the British national sf convention.”
The Rotsler Award is named for the late Bill Rotsler (1926-97), a talented and prolific artist who won five Hugo Awards for Best Fan Artist over a long stretch of time. The award was initiated in 1998, and is currently judged by Claire Brialey, Mike Glyer, and John Hertz. Previous winners include Steve Stiles, Grant Canfield, Arthur Thomson, Brad Foster, Kurt Erichsen, Ray Nelson, Harry Bell, Marc Schirmeister, Alexis Gilliland, Terry Jeeves, Taral Wayne, and Dan Steffan.
