Top Box Office Grossers: Second Week in September 2010

Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 10-16 September 2010. Pretty much the only new film this week, Resident Evil: Afterlife dominated the box office this week, raising $33.9 million (The American, at #2, took in $7.7 million in its second week, for a total of $30.1 million). The Last Exorcism fell from #5 to #9, grossing $4.2 million, for a three-week total of $38.9 million. Inception slipped from #9 to #10, earning $3.8 million, for a nine-week total of $283.2 million.
Nanny McPhee Returns slipped from #10 to #12, cleaning up $2.4 million, for a four-week total of $26.6 million. Despicable Me slipped from #12 to #13, grossing $2.0 million, for a ten-week total of $243.8 million. Vampires Suck slipped from #13 to #14, sucking up $1.7 million, for a four-week total of $35.3 million. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World climbed from #18 to #17, battling up $1.1 million (less than half of what it took it last week), for a five-week total of $30.7 million. Avatar fell from #14 to #18, earning $1.0 million, for a combined thirty-nine week total of $759.8 million. Twilight: Eclipse, which last week fell out of the top 25, this week climbed back up to #19, earning $1.0 million, for an eleven-week total of $299.9 million. Toy Story 3 fell from #16 to #20, taking in $950 thousand, for a thirteen-week total of $410.2 million. Piranha 3D fell from #15 to #21, gobbling up $950 thousand, for a four-week total of $24.6 million.
Falling out of the top 25 this week were:
Cats & Dogs: Revenge of Kitty Galore (last week’s #24) after seven weeks in the theatres (box office total: $42.7 million)
The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (last week’s #25) after nine weeks in release ($62.3 million).
