We missed a week, so we’re catching up with a double report this time out.
Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 2-8 July 2010. In its first full week in release, the newest installment of the Twilight saga, Eclipse, sucked up $110.9 million, to hold the #1 spot on the charts, for a box-office total of $203.7 million (it opened on 30 June). The Last Airbender (which was at #5 on its first day in release) climbed to #2, and conjured up $65.6 million in its first full week in release, for a box-office total of $83.1 million (it opened on 1 July). Toy Story 3 was thus pushed down from #2 to #3, as it took in $59.4 million, for a three-week total of $318.2 million. Shrek Forever After slipped from #8 to #9, grossing $1.9 million, for a seven-week total of $233.3 million.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time slipped from #10 to #12, conjuring up $1.2 million, for a six-week total of $88.7 million. Iron Man 2 held strong at #13, earning $1.2 million, for a nine-week total of $308.8 million. How to Train Your Dragon also held strong, at #19, swooping up $750 thousand, for a fifteen-week total of $216.6 million. Marmaduke stumbled, falling from #15 to #20, woofing up $725 thousand, for a five-week total of $31.2 million. Robin Hood fell from #17 to #21, redistributing $625 thousand, for an eight-week total of $104.2 million.
Jonah Hex plummeted from last week’s #12 right out of the top 25 this week, with a total take of $10.0 million after three weeks in release.
For the week of 9-15 July 2010, the new animated comedy, Despicable Me, opened at the top of the charts, grossing $85.6 million. That pushed Twilight: Eclipse down from #1 to #2, where it sucked up $47.7 million, for a two-week total of $251.4 million. Predators opened at #3, grabbing $33.3 million. Toy Story 3 showed some strength, slipping only from #3 to #4, as it took in $32.7 million, for a four-week total of $351.0 million. The Last Airbender fell faster, dropping from #2 to #6, conjuring up $24.3 million, for a two-week total of $107.4 million. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (which opened on the 14th), managed to wind up at #9 on the charts, as it generated $7.1 million.
Shrek Forever After took a tumble, falling from #9 to #14, grossing $825 thousand, for an eight-week total of $234.1 million. Marmaduke managed to climb the charts, from #20 to #18, as it woofed up $625 thousand, for a six-week total of $31.8 million. Iron Man 2 fell from #13 to #19, earning $600 thousand, for a ten-week total of $309.5 million.How to Train Your Dragon slipped from #19 to #21, swooping up $575 thousand, for a sixteen-week total of $217.2 million. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time crashed from #12 to #23, conjuring up $525 thousand, for a seven-week total of $89.2 million. Robin Hood fell from #21 to #25, redistributing $450 thousand, for a nine-week total of $104.7 million.
