British actor Ian Carmichael died 5 February 2010. Born in Hull, England, on 18 June 1920, he was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2003 Queen’s Birthday Honours List for his services to drama.
After studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Carmichael made his stage debut at the age of 19. He took time off from his career to serve in the British Army during World War II, and then returned to the theater. His film debut came in 1948’s Bond Street (a minor role), but he was best known for playing P.G. Wodehouse’s Bertie Wooster and Dorothy Sayers’s Lord Peter Wimsey, both on television.
His genre roles include: The Wind in the Willows (1983), From Beyond the Grave (1973), Meet Mr. Lucifer (1953), and Ghost Ship (1952).
Carmichael’s first wife, Pym McLean, died in 1983, after 40 years of marriage. He is survived by his second wife, Kate Fenton, two daughters from his first marriage, five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
