Actor Andrew Koenig was found dead today in Vancouver (British Columbia)’s Stanley Park. He was last seen on 16 February, and is assumed to have taken his own life. Born 17 August 1968 in Los Angeles, California, his father, Walter Koenig, said “My son took his own life. Obviously, he was in a lot of pain.” At that same police news conference, the elder Koenig said his son had been battling depression, and spoke to others in the same situation: “Don’t ignore it; don’t rationalize it. Extend a hand.”
Andrew Koenig was best known for playing Kirk Cameron’s friend Richard “Boner” Stabone in 25 episodes of the 1980s’ sitcom Growing Pains. His genre roles include appearances in: InAlienable (2008), Batman: Dead End (2003), and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993, “Sanctuary”).
In addition to acting, Koenig was a film editor, director, and writer. His genre productions include: The Gnostic (2007), and Good Boy (2003).
Koenig is the son of actor Walter Koenig, who played Chekov on the original Star Trek tv series and into the films, as well as Bester on Babylon 5. His father and mother, Judy Levitt, as well as his sister, actress Danielle Koenig, survive him.
