Top Box Office Grossers: Fourth Week of November 2009

Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 20-26 November 2009. Surprising absolutely no one, the second installment in the Twilight series based on Stephenie Meyer’s books topped the charts. New Moon sucked in $164.7 million in its first week in release. Sports filck The Blind Side opened at #2. Disaster porn flick 2012 was therefore pushed down from #1 to #3, reaping $39.1 million, for a two-week total of $120.8 million. Disney’s animated A Christmas Carol was pushed from #2 to #4, scaring up $21.8 million, for a three-week total of $89.4 million. New animated sci-fi flick Planet 51 opened at #5, earning $18.3 million. The Men Who Stare at Goats fell from #3 to #9, grossing $3.5 million, for a three-week total of $28.4 million. Fantastic Mr. Fox, which last week was only open in very minimal release, this week found itself ranked #10 on screens across the country, nabbing $2.7 million, for a two-week total of $3.1 million.
Paranormal Activity fell from #8 to #15, taking in $1.9 million, for a nine-week total of $106.6 million. The Fourth Kind fell from #6 to #16, grabbing $1.9 million, for a three-week total of $23.6 million. Where the Wild Things Are fell from #12 to #17, earning $850 thousand, for a six-week total of $74.8 million. The Box fell from #10 to #20, taking in $600 thousand, for a three-week total of $14.6 million. Astro Boy fell from #13 to #22, grossing $500 thousand, for a five week total of $18.7 million. Disney’s The Princess and the Frog doesn’t officially open until 11 December 2009, but still managed to find itself at #23 on this week’s chart, with showings in only two theatres: it earned just over $400 thousand.
SF/F/H movies topped the charts this week, but they also fell out of the top 25 in droves. Dropping off the charts this week were:
