British actor Edward Woodward died 16 November 2009. Born 1 June 1930 in Surrey, England, he is perhaps best known for his starring role in the tv series The Equalizer, for which he won a Golden Globe (in 1987), and was nominated for another, as well as for five Emmys. The 88 episodes of his series ran on CBS between 1985 and 1989.
Woodward started his career on the stage in England, in a 1946 production of A Kiss for Cinderella. He moved on to film and television roles in his home country, before crossing the Atlantic for The Equalizer. He also starred in the short-lived British dystopian series 1990 (1978).
His genre appearances include The Lone Gunmen (2001), Crusade (1999), Gulliver’s Travels (1996), Arthur the King (1985), A Christmas Carol (1984), The Appointment (1981), The Wicker Man (1973), and Incense for the Damned (1970).
Woodward is survived by his second wife, Michele Dotrice, whom he married in 1987 (his first marriage, to Venetia Barrett, ended in divorce in 1986, after 34 years). He is also survived by three children from his first marriage—Tim, Peter, and Sarah—and a daughter (Emily) from his second, all of whom are actors. Woodward’s grandson, Sam (Tim’s son), is also an actor.
