Top Box Office Grossers: Third Week of October 2009

Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 16-22 October 2009. The film based on the beloved child’s book Where the Wild Things Are topped the charts, taking in $39.5 million. Paranormal Activity is still climbing the charts, as it gains wider and wider release. This week, it’s up from #4 to #3, grossing $26.9 million, for a four-week total of $40.5 million. New horror film The Stepfather opened at #5, bringing in $13.9 million. Zombieland fell from #2 to #6, gobbling up $10.0 million, for a three-week total of $63.0 million. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs fell from #3 to #7, taking in $9.4 million, for a five-week total of $109.6 million. The Toy Story / Toy Story 2 re-release slipped from #5 to #8, earning $3.6 million, for a three-week total of $29.1 million. Surrogates slipped from #6 to #9, bringing in $2.6 million, for a four-week total of $37.0 million.
GI Joe slipped from #18 to #19, grossing $500 thousand, for an eleven-week total of $149.8 million. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince slipped from #24 to #25, conjuring up $350 thousand, for a fourteen-week total of $301.2 million.
Pandorum plummeted out of the top 25, from last week’s #16, in its fourth week in release. 9 also fell out of the top 25, from last week’s #17 (it’s been out for six weeks).
