Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 18-24 September 2009. New animated comedy Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs topped the charts, opening at #1 and gobbling up $35.4 million. Animated post-apocalyptic flick 9 fell hard (behind four brand new films), from #2 to #6, earning $6.9 million this week, for a two-week total of $24.3 million to date. Horror film Sorority Row showed some strength, slipping only from #7 to #9, grossing $3.3 million, for a two-week total of $9.6 million. The Final Destination dropped from #5 to #10, bringing in $3.2 million, for a four-week total of $63.2 million.
District 9 fell from #8 to #13, taking in $2.7 million, for a six-week total of $112.4 million. Gamer fell from #9 to #14, grabbing $2.0 million, for a three-week total of $19.6 million. GI Joe was down from #11 to #15, grossing $1.8 million, for a seven-week total of $146.6 million. The Time Traveler’s Wife slipped from #12 to #16, earning $1.4 million, for a six-week total of $61.2 million. Halloween II slipped from #14 to #17, taking in just under $1.0 million, for a four-week total of $31.7 million. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince fell from #17 to #23, making another $500 thousand, for a ten-week total of $299.7 million. G-Force fell from #18 to #25, grossing $400 thousand, for a nine-week total of $117.3 million.
Shorts (last week’s #16), Ponyo (last week’s #21), and Up (last week’s #22) all fell out of the top 25. Shorts has been out for five weeks, Ponyo for six, and Up for seventeen weeks (this is the second time Up has fallen out of the top 25).
