Character actor Jack Manning died 31 August 2009 of natural causes. Born Jack Wilson Marks on 3 June 1916 in Cincinnati, Ohio, he got his acting start on radio shows while he was in college (the University of Cincinnati, from which he earned a BA in economics in 1938).
Marks moved to New York in 1941 and appeared in many radio serials, including The Green Hornet and The Shadow. He also debuted on Broadway that year, in the comedy Junior Miss. Even after moving into film and television, he kept his hand in the stage: he was a producer of the Helen Hayes Repertory Company, directed some of their productions, and taught acting in New York and Los Angeles.
His genre appearances include: Freddy’s Nightmares (1989), Small Wonder (1986), The Strongest Man in the World (1975), The Six Million Dollar Man (1974), Herbie Rides Again (1974), Now You See Him, Now You Don’t (1972), and Lights Out (1950).
Manning’s first marriage ended in divorce. He is survived by his second wife, Frances Ann Smith, whom he married in 1967. He is also survived by a daughter from his first marriage and two children from his second, three grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.
