British actress Mollie Sugden died 1 July 2009. Born Mary Isobel Sugden on 21 July 1922 in Keighley, West Yorkshire, England, she was best known for playing Mrs. Betty Slocombe in 69 episodes of the long-running British soap opera Are You Being Served?.
She worked in an armaments factory during World War II, making shells for the Royal Navy, before studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. After her studying, she got her start in repertory theater. Her first regular tv role came in Hugh and I (1962). She also had the title-role in the short-lived 1978 series Come Back Mrs. Noah, in which a 21st century British housewife gets stranded in orbit aboard Britain’s new space station.
Sugden’s other genre roles include: The Princess and the Goblin (1992), The BFG (1989), The Talking Parcel (1978), and Mandog (1972).
In 1958, Sugden married actor William Moore, and in 1987-88, they appeared together in the series My Husband and I. He died in 2000. She is survived by their two children and five grandchildren.
