Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 19-25 June 2009. Sequel Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen opened on the 24th, and still managed to top the charts for the week. It took in $60.6 million through the 25th, and through its first weekend, has grossed about half of what the original Transformers took during its entire run. Looks like another massive blockbuster (think last summer’s The Dark Knight). With a couple of other new movies this week, the top of the charts sees its biggest change in nearly a month. The Proposal opened at #2, and The Hangover dropped from #1 to #3. Animated adventure Up fell from #2 to #4, but kept its position as the top genre film. It took in another $34.4 million, for a four-week total of $237.2 million. The new Jack Black comedy Year One opened at a relatively lowly #5, grossing $26.5 million. Night at the Museum: Battle Smithsonian was down from #4 to #7, earning $11.1 million, for a five-week total of $159.7 million. Star Trek showed some strength, slipping only from #6 to #8, garnering another $7.9 million, for a seven-week total of $246.6 million. Land of the Lost lost more ground, from #5 to #9, taking in $5.9 million, for a three-week total of $45.6 million. Imagine That fell from #7 to #10, earning $4.9 million, for a two-week total of $13.1 million.
Terminator Salvation was down from #8 to #11, grossing $4.4 million, for a five-week box office total of $120.8 million. Angels & Demons fell from #9 to #12, grabbing another $3.8 million, for a six-week total of $129.2 million. Drag Me to Hell was down from #10 to #12, dragging in $2.7 million, for a four-week total of $40.0 million. X-Men Origins: Wolverine fell from #12 to #15, bringing in $875 thousand, for an eight-week total of $177.5 million. 17 Again resumed the downward march, falling back from #15 to #19, earning $475 thousand, for a ten-week total of $62.9 million. The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past fell from #16 to #22, taking in $325 thousand, for an eight-week total of $53.5 million. Race to Witch Mountain fell from #23 to #25, bringing in $275 thousand (more than last week), for a fifteen-week total of $66.9 million.
Pushed by several strong openers, two genres films fell out of the top 25, to, respectively, #26 and #27. Monsters vs. Aliens, last week’s #20, fell out of the top 25 after a remarkable thirteen-week run. And Moon, which opened last week at #25 and is still in very limited release, was pushed out of the top 25, even though it earned twice as much money this week as last.
