Top Box Office Grossers: Third Week in April

Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 17-23 April 2009. New opener 17 Again, though not pitched as fantasy, definitely qualifies. It opened at #1, grossing $28.3 million. Monsters vs. Aliens, held steady this week at #3 (and with two new movies ahead of it, that’s a jump on all the rest of the competition). This week, the animated adventure brought in $16.5 million, for a four-week total of $166.3 million. Knowing tumbled from #5 to #9, earning $4.6 million, for a five-week total of $74.8 million.
The Haunting in Connecticut fell from #7 to #11, grossing $3.9 million, for a four-week total of $52.7 million. Dragonball Evolution was down from #8 to #12, taking in $2.2 million, for a two-week total of $8.4 million. Race to Witch Mountain dropped from #11 to #16, taking in $1.0 million, for a six-week total of $64.0 million. The Last House on the Left was down from #15 to #20, grossing $450 thousand, for a six-week total of $32.4 million.
Watchmen and Coraline both fell out of the top 25. Watchmen was at #16 last week, and plummeted in this, its seventh week in release. Coraline, last week’s #24, is in its eleventh week in the theatres.
