Top Box Office Grossers: First Week in April

Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 3-9 April 2009. Yet again, a new opener took the top spot. This week, however, it wasn’t a genre film, but rather, the sequel Fast & Furious. That pushed last week’s #1, Monsters vs. Aliens, down to #2, where it brought in $46.2 million, for a two-week total of $118.4 million. The Haunting in Connecticut was also pushed down, from #2 to #3, grossing $12.9 million, for a two-week total of $40.6 million. Knowing also moved down, from #3 to #4, earning $11.3 million, for a three-week total of $61.3 million. Race to Witch Mountain was pushed down from #6 to #8 (new release Adventureland opened at #6), taking in another $5.0 million, for a four-week total of $60.1 million.
The Last House on the Left slipped from #9 to #12, grossing $1.7 million, for a four-week total of $31.1 million. Watchmen fell a little faster, from #8 to #13, earning $1.6 million, for a five-week total of $105.9 million. Coraline did pretty well this week, slipping only from #17 to #19, and bringing in $300 thousand, for a nine-week total of $74.4 million. Push, which last week fell out of the top 25, this week climbed back up to #25, as it took in more than $200 thousand, for a nine-week total of $31.4 million.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which returned to the top 25 last week at #23, slipped off the list again this week, its fifteenth in the theatres.
