On 8 April, Image Comics will release the first volume of The Strange Adventures of H.P. Lovecraft, a graphic novel miniseries created by Mac Carter, Adam Byrne, and Tony Salmons. The book is based on the life of the famous horror writer. “Toiling away as a timid and eccentric writer of pulp horror stories, H.P. Lovecraft, is powerless in the world… in love with a girl who doesn’t love him back, mired in a profession that inspires no respect and frozen in the grip of a terrible writer’s block. Until one day when everything changes. Lovecraft comes in contact with an ancient book that passes onto him an insidious curse: whenever he sleeps, his darkest nightmares come true and are loosed on the world. Suddenly, this shy and bumbling writer becomes both an unwitting god of destruction and the only man who can fight the wickedness he unleashes. It’s a fantastical revision of the life and work of H.P. Lovecraft, a story in the mold of the classic Universal horror movies. A weird tale indeed.”
And now comes word that Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment have bought film rights to the story. They expect Ron Howard to direct.
According to Variety reports that Universal was interested in the project “because its take on classic horror fits in well with the studio’s library of monster fare featuring Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy, and the Wolf Man, the last of which is being brought back to the big screen later this year.”
On their blog, the creators write: “We are very humbled and excited about the news and can’t wait to share this book with you. It’s been a long, hard slog, nine years and counting to get this project to where it is today. We experienced some very dark days that even Lovecraft himself may have tipped his hat at. We only hope to honor Howard Phillips Lovecraft’s legacy, authorship, and rabid fans by telling a good yarn.”
