Andrew Porter points out this article in The New York Times, which discusses the work of Dutch artist Floris Schönfeld, who is currently at The Watermill Center creating a Klingon opera. Schönfeld speaks Dutch, English, German, and basic Klingon, and began work on the opera—called ‘u’—as part of his master’s thesis at the Interfaculty ArtScience program at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague.
An outgrowth of that effort was his formation of the Klingon Terran Research Ensemble, with which he performed parts of his opera last summer.
Now, at the Watermill Center, he is continuing his work, the goal of which is “to create and perform an authentic Klingon opera, here on Earth, with a human cast.” In order to do that, he first needs to “establish its musical system, the tradition of themes and narrative modes, the instruments, the musicians’ techniques, and the visual/theatrical interpretation.”
The Watermill Center, was founded 15 years ago by theatre and opear director Robert Wilson as “an international, multi-disciplinary center for studies in the arts and humanities.” It’s located in Southampton, Long Island, New York, and on 15 November, it will be hosting a discussion and performance by Schönfeld.
