Solaris Books has signed Jetse de Vries to edit “a major new anthology of near-future, optimistic SF stories.” Shine will be a collection in which “some of the genre’s brightest stars and some of its most exciting new talents portray the possible roads to a better tomorrow. Definitely not a plethora of Pollyannas (but neither a barrage of dystopias), Shine will show that positive change is far from being a foregone conclusion, but needs to be hardfought, innovative, robust, and imaginative.”
Solaris Christian Dunn said, “Jetse has been quite vocal in his opinions about moving sf in a more positive direciton, and it’s a journey Solaris are delighted to be accompanying him on.”
de Vries will be reading sf stories up to 10,000 words for the anthology in May and June of 2009, and offering 5 cents a word (on publication). Solaris expects to publish the book in early 2010. Brief writers’ guidelines are available on this page.
de Vries was co-editor of Interzone for four and a half years. His fiction has appeared in Postscripts, Clarkesworld Magazine, Hub, Escape Pod<,/i>, and Flurb.
