Top Box Office Grossers: Third Week of September

Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 12-18 September 2008. It took four brand new movies (Burn After Reading, Righteous Kill, Tyler Perry’s Family That Preys, and The Women, as well as a fifth strong week for Tropic Thunder to finally push The Dark Knight out of the top 5. This week, it was down from #3 to #6 taking in another $5.3 million, for a nine-week total box office take of nearly $519 million. Death Race fell from #7 to #10, bringing in $2.7 million, for a four-week total of $33.9 million.
Babylon A.D. was down from #6 to #12, grossing $2.4 million, for a three-week total of $21.0 million. Fly Me to the Moon moved up for the second week in a row, this time from #16 to #14, earning another $1.7 million, for a five-week total of $10.2 million. Journey to the Center of the Earth held on to its #17 slot, taking in $1.4 million, for a ten-week total of $98.3 million. Mirrors dropped from #12 to #18, bringing in another $1.2 million, for a five-week total of $29.4 million. Star Wars: The Clone Wars dropped from #13 to #19, grossing just over $1.0 million, for a five-week total of $34.1 million. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor was down from #14 to #20, bringing in $850 thousand, for a seven-week total of $101.8 million. WALL-E held on at #22, earning $650 thousand, for a twelve-week total of $220.2 million.
Get Smart makes a reappearance on the list, coming in at #24 after five weeks below the top 25. This week, it earned $500 thousand, for a thirteen week total of $129.2 million.
Hancock dropped out of the top 25 for the second time (after only one week at #25 this time) in its eleventh week in the theaters.
