Top Box Office Grossers: Fourth Week of August

Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 22-28 August 2008. Last week’s #1, Tropic Thunder, held onto the top spot, and two new releases followed it. The House Bunny was #2 and Death Race 2000 sequel (or so) Death Race opened at #3, grossing $16.8 million. The Dark Knight was pushed down from #2 to #4, taking in $14.8 million in its sixth week in domestic release, for a cumulative (domestic) box office take of $493.7 million (and early word from this past weekend makes it only the second film to gross more than $500 million—more data next week). Star Wars: The Clone Wars dropped from #3 to #6, bringing in spot with a box office of $7.6 million, for a two-week total of $26.9 million. Mirrors was down from #5 to #8, taking in $6.9 million, for a two-week total of $22.1 million. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor dropped from #6 to #9, bringing in $5.5 million, for a four-week total of $95.2 million.
Journey to the Center of the Earth fell from #11 to #15, grossing $3.1 million for a seven-week total of $92.8 million. Fly Me to the Moon dropped from #13 to #16, taking in just under $2 million, for a two-week total of $4.7 million. WALL-E fell a little faster, from #12 to #17, bringing in $1.5 million for a nine-week total of $216.8 million. Kung Fu Panda experienced a rebound this week, jumping from #25 up to #21, grossing $850 thousand, for a twelve-week total of just under $213 million. Hancock fell hard, from #14 to #22, bringing in just under $850 thousand, for an eight-week total of $226.5 million. Space Chimps also fell fast, from #16 down to #25, taking in just over $500 thousand, for a six-week total of $28.5 million.
Hellboy II: The Golden Army, Wanted, and Iron Man all fell out of the top 25 this week. Hellboy, last week’s #20, was in its seventh week in the theatres. Wanted fell from #22 after nine weeks. And Iron Man dropped out from #23 after a remarkable seventeen weeks and more than $317 million.
