Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 15-21 August 2008. After four weeks at the top of the charts, The Dark Knight was finally pushed off its perch by new release Tropic Thunder. The Batman Begins sequel took in another $24.2 million in its fifth week in domestic release, for a cumulative (domestic) box office take of $478.9 million. Another new release, animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars slipped in behind the caped one, opening in the #3 spot with a box office of $19.3 million. New horror flick Mirrors opened at #5, taking in $15.2 million. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor dropped from #3 to #6 (behind those three new openers), bringing in $11.7 million, for a three-week total of $89.7 million.
Journey to the Center of the Earth fell from #8 to #11, grossing $5.0 million for a six-week total of $89.7 million. WALL-E fell from #9 to #12, taking in $3.0 million for an eight-week total of $215.3 million. Quiet new release Fly Me to the Moon, which had very little buzz, opened at #13, grossing $2.7 million. Hancock fell from #10 to #14, bringing in $2.4 million for a seven-week total of $225.7 million. Space Chimps was down from #12 to #16, taking in $1.2 million for a five-week total of $28.0 million. Hellboy II: The Golden Army dropped from #14 to #20, earning $750 thousand, for a six-week total of $74.9 million. Wanted was down from #17 to #22, taking in $500 thousand, for an eight-week total of $133.5 million. Iron Man slipped from #20 to #23, bringing in $500 thousand for a sixteen-week total of $317.2 million. Kung Fu Panda dropped from #19 to #25, grossing just under $500 thousand, for an eleven-week ttoal of $212.1 million.
The X-Files: I Want to Believe, Get Smart, and The Incredible Hulk all dropped out of the top 25 this week. The X-Files last week was #13 in its third week in the theatres; this week it’s out of the top 25, and only in release for four weeks. Get Smart was #18 last week in its eighth week. The Incredible Hulk, at #22, had been in the theatres for nine weeks.
