Top Box Office Grossers: Second Week of August

Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 8-14 August 2008. The Dark Knight kept its death-grip on the #1 spot for an incredible fourth straight week, taking in nearly $39.2 million, for a cumulative (domestic) box office take of $454.7 million. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor dropped from #2 to #3 (behind new film Pineapple Express), bringing in $23.5 million, for a two-week total of $78.0 million. Journey to the Center of the Earth fell from #6 to #8, grossing $7.8 million for a five-week total of $84.7 million. WALL-E held steady in the #9 spot, taking in $5.2 million for a seven-week total of $212.3 million. Hancock fell from #8 to #10, grossing $4.9 million for a six-week total of $223.3 million.
Space Chimps held steady at #12, taking in $3.0 million for a four-week total of $26.8 million. The X-Files: I Want to Believe fell from #11 to #13, grossing $1.8 million for a three-week total of $20.3 million. Hellboy II: The Golden Army slipped from #13 to #14, earning $1.8 million, for a five-week total of $74.1 million. Wanted fell from #14 to #17, taking in $1.1 million for a seven-week total of $133.0 million. Get Smart was down from #16 to #18, grossing just under $800 thousand for an eight-week total of $127.8 million. Kung Fu Panda fell from #17 to #19, bringing in more than $750 thousand for a ten-week total of $211.7 million. Iron Man fell from #18 to #20, taking in $650 thousand for a fifteen-week total of $316.7 million. The Incredible Hulk was down from #19 to #22, bringing in almost $500 thousand for a nine-week total of $134.0 million.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian both dropped out of the top 25. Indy was #20 last week, and slipped below our threshhold in its twelfth week in release. Caspian was slightly longer lived, dropping from last week’s #24 in its thirteenth week in the theatres.
