Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 1-7 August 2008. The Dark Knight held on to the #1 spot for a third straight week, taking in nearly $59.7 million, for a cumulative box office take of $410.8 million. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor opened in the #2 spot, bringing in $51.7 million. Journey to the Center of the Earth fell from #4 to #6, grossing $9.7 million for a four-week total of $76.0 million. Hancock was down from #6 to #8, taking in $7.1 million for a five-week total of $217.9 million. WALL-E was down from #7 to #9, grossing $6.9 million for a six-week total of $206.4 million.
Apparently, there isn’t much belief in The X-Files: I Want to Believe, which fell from #5 to #11, taking in $4.6 million for a two-week total of $18.2 million. Space Chimps was down from #9 to #12, grossing $4.2 million for a three-week total of $23.4 million. Hellboy II: The Golden Army dropped from #8 to #13, earning $3.3 million, for a four-week total of $72.1 million. Wanted fell from #10 to #14, taking in $1.7 million for a six-week total of $131.8 million. Get Smart was down from #11 to #16, taking in $1.4 million for a seven-week total of $126.9 million. Kung Fu Panda fell from #12 to #17, bringing in more than $900 thousand for a nine-week total of $210.8 million. Iron Man actually climbed this week, up from #19 to #18, taking in $850 thousand (almost twice what it did last week) for a fourteen-week total of nearly $316 million. The Incredible Hulk was down from #15 to #19, bringing in almost $700 thousand for an eight-week total of $133.5 million. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull dropped from #13 to #20, grossing $500 thousand for an eleven-week total of $314.5 million. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian was back down from #22 to #24, bringing in almost $300 thousand for a twelve-week total of $140.7 million.
Meet Dave and The Happening both fell out of the top 25. Meet Dave fell from #17 to #27 in its fourth week in release, while The Happening dropped from #25 to #30 in its eighth week in the theaters.
I can’t believe it took The Happening eight weeks to fall out of the top 25. Nobody must have told anybody how bad it was because they didn’t want to admit they’d sat through it.
