SF poet, talk-show host, and college professor Herb Kauderer married professor Isabelle Fournier on 19 July 2008, at 4:10PM. The groom’s son Arthur (aged 10) served as ring bearer, while his daughter Moira (13) served as court hostess, and Shannon (17) as photographer. The couple’s daughter Katherine (2) watched intently as 36 close friends and family members attended the wedding: 6 from Quebec, 5 from Ontario, 2 from England, 3 from Ohio, 2 from Virginia, 1 from Pennsylvania, and the rest from Western New York. Guests included Carolyn Clink, the award-winning poet from Mississauga; her brother, Rhysling-nominated poet David Clink of Thornhill, Ontario; author and (Kauderer’s talk-show co-host) Alan Katerinsky; and renowned filker Lawrence Dean, from England, who performed a brief set of songs at the reception.
Despite the international flavor of the wedding, it was a village affair with the brief ceremony held in the village court house in the Lancaster (New York) Municipal Building. Photos were taken in front of the nearby Lancaster Opera House (1897), and the reception was held two blocks away in the banquet room of Eddie Ryan’s Irish Pub and Restaurant. Music was provided by the Celtic/folk duo Kindred. Most of the guests joined the couple at their home afterwards (another two blocks away), for coffee, tea, beer, cake, cheesecakes, and Italian cookies. The couple honeymooned at the Confluence SF Convention near Pittsburgh.
Kauderer has published more than 800 poems, including three Rhysling Award nominees, and has had more than twenty short stories published, mostly in the small and mid-sized press. Since January, Kauderer has been co-host of the popular Orthopedic Horseshoes audio talk-show on ThinkTwiceRadio.com. The monthly talk-show centers on topics of interest to SF fans. Kauderer, who has an MFA in screenwriting, was the main screenwriter for Beyond the Mainstream, an independent film currently in post-production and due out by the end of the year. He is an assistant professor of English at Hilbert College in Hamburg, NY. Isabelle Fournier, originally of Montmagny, Quebec, teaches French at Niagara College in Niagara Falls, Ontario, and is a freelance translator of medical text.
I was bummed to miss the wedding! (My wife Carolyn and brother-in-law David were there, as you note.) The date was announced quite late, and I was already committed to be at Readercon that weekend. But many, many congratulations to Herb and Isabelle — two of my favorite people!
I haven’t communicated with Herb in a long time, but I published quite a few of his poems, back in the day. I am delighted to learn about the wedding and I wish them all of the best. And I wouldn’t mind some more submissions to dreams and nightmares [hint].
Congratulations! So happy to hear this good news.
love,
Denise
