US astronaut G. David Low died of colon cancer on 15 March 2008. Born 19 Febuary 1956 in Cleveland, Ohio, his father, George M. Low, was a director of NASA, and was with the agency from before 1960. He worked on the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo missions, and died in 1984.
Astronaut Low received degrees from Washington and Lee University (1978), Cornell University (1980) and Stanford University (1983). He was selected by NASA in 1984 and joined the astronaut corps in June 1985. He was the spacecraft communicator (CAPCOM) for STS missions 26, 27, 29, and 30. He logged more than 714 hours in space, including 6 hours on a spacewalk. He was a mission specialist on STS-32 (Columbia, January 1990), flight engineer on STS-43 (Atlantis, August 1991), and payload commander on STS-57 (Endeavour, June-July 1993). He retired from NASA in 1996 and joined Orbital Science Corporation’s Launch Systems Group.
He is survived by his wife, JoAnn Andochick Low; their three children; his mother, Mary Ruth Low; and his two brothers and two sisters.
